Humane Happenings Week of 9/25/16

by Eliana Aubin

Peggy
Teenage felines Henry and Vulcan, together with little Peggy, a very young three-legged white Siamese-mix kitten with an inquisitive personality and big bright blue eyes, are now the newest residents of the Cool Cat Neighborhood at Desert Haven Animal Refuge. Desert Haven is owned and operated by the Sierra County Humane Society, the non-profit animal welfare organization that serves this area of New Mexico.  Henry, Vulcan and Peggy arrived with their own sad story. But at Desert Haven, they are finally safe, well-cared for, and loved. That is what Desert Haven is all about.

Peggy
Three-legged little Peggy was born under a shed about eight weeks ago. When rescued a couple of weeks ago, neither her mother nor her siblings could be found. There was “no place at the Inn” at the time - (inside the Cool Cat Neighborhood) - but how could we push away the helpless little one? It’s hard enough for a tiny kitty to survive all alone, but a three-legged one has to overcome even more obstacles.  Among other life-threatening hurdles, a three-legged feline certainly can’t climb a tree, for example, to run away from an aggressive dog, or a hungry coyote - or even a heart-less human.

Interested in learning more about the newest little rescues at Desert Haven?  Check-out our Petfinder Page and also our Facebook  page at www.Facebook.com/DesertHavenAnimalRefuge.  These last few weeks, we have added to our Adopt-a-Pet Referral list a few little dogs in need of a new home: young adult male Shi-tzu, a very young Boxer puppy and a small terrier.

Our Desert Haven team continues to invite kind-hearted individuals willing and able to help us socialize and walk-on-a-leash several of our newest small canine rescues. These very sweet young dogs are still very shy from the ordeal they went through before their rescue at the sanctuary. They need special individual attention from good-hearted individuals willing to help. Call us at 575-894-2639 or e-mail us at weR4pets@gmail.com for more information.  Morning animal care at Desert Haven includes dog walking. It is currently handled between the hours of 7:30 AM and 10:30 AM.  With the days getting shorter, Daily animal care will soon start at 8 AM.  Visit our web site at www. DesertHavenAnimalRefuge.com.   You can also write to us at PO Box 638, Williamsburg, NM 87942.

HUMANE HAPPENINGS - Week of September 11 2016

by Eliana Aubin

My name is Mollie and I am the newbie
The Sierra County Humane Society and Desert Haven Animal Refuge offer anyone who wishes to make a difference in the lives of dogs and cats down-on-their-luck the unique opportunity to do so, in their own individual way.
Are you a dog aficionado, but perhaps you don’t have the space or lifestyle that allows you to share your life with a dog? Then become a Dog Walker at Desert Haven! The sanctuary is located on the outskirts of Williamsburg.  Walking in a serene environment, in the fresh morning air and with a dog by your side is good for your health, both physical and emotional.  At Desert Haven, you will be surrounded with happy furry boys and girls of all sizes and temperaments as well as with people of kindred spirit, people who are committed to make a difference.

Working on Scruffy's and Lucy's yard
Jack and Phyllis are Desert Haven’s Operations Coordinators.  Kevin, an Air Force Veteran who relocated from Colorado at this time last year, is the sanctuary Animal Care Coordinator.  These kind-hearted people work exceptionally well together and with the other members of the Desert Haven staff  and the atmosphere around them is one of friendliness and cooperation, of warmth and caring that are valued and cultivated within our entire animal welfare organization. Belinda came on board in the Spring of this year to take on the position of bookkeeper for our non-profit organization. Belinda’s many strengths, including her professionalism and her love for all animals, together with her willingness and tendency to routinely go above and beyond, are making her an exception individual and a true asset to our animal welfare organization and our no-kill sanctuary.
Are you a handyman willing to share some of your skills and time with our team? Kevin and Jack need help installing a brand new sink in the Eagle Point Mobile home. We have the sink and its plumbing accessories. Can you spare some of your time on a Tuesday, please let us know at 575-894-2639 or weR4pets@gmail.com.
Canned dog and cat food, also dog treats, are always a high priority at Desert Haven. We are looking for construction and roofing material for our projects, also for a good used swamp cooler and a lawn mower. We can pick up if needed.

Week of September 7 Humane Happenings

by Eliana Aubin

Starlight enjoys a visit!
Desert Haven Animal Refuge is Sierra County’s no-kill sanctuary. Dog Town at Desert Haven is known to be a fun place to be, both for the canines residents and also for everyone who helps care for them. There are several ways to be involved at Dog Town. One can walk the dogs in the morning, between 7:30 and 10:30, a most enjoyable activity indeed.  Helping feed and care for the little guys and girls inside their own living quarters is also part of the rewarding feeling of doing something worthwhile in one’s life. Not only an animal lover can make great connections with the fur-babies there, without the long-term commitment of responsible dog ownership, but one also knows that everyone who resides there is a lucky dog indeed, living every day in a loving and safe environment. Here at Desert Haven, the staff cares for each and every fur-baby as their own, and adoption applications are carefully reviewed before any of our little ones moves out of Dog Town at Desert Haven.

Tico is a young Pomeranian mix.  Micky, Jack and Teddy are all young, small, Terrier-mix. Their equally small playmate, Holly, is a Miniature Pinscher. Little Jenny-May, Mel and Speckles are young heeler-mix. Each one is small to medium size and looks very different from the other.  Goldie is a senior cocker spaniel - a loving little gal who would make a great companion for a senior person.  Red the Golden Retriever, Ben the Black Lab, Forest the Hound and Mosey the Ridgeback, Scruffy the Shepherd, Lucy the heeler-shepherd, Starlight the Manchester Terrier, Dixie the Airedale-terrier are also currently residing at Dog Town.  Buster and Molly are in the process of being adopted. Lilly was just adopted out.  Interested in visiting them? Come on down to Desert Haven on a Tuesday.

This week’s wish list: a used refrigerator in good working condition. We have needed one for a long while now, and have been hoping along the way for some help from supporters in replacing our old fridge that is beyond "its last leg". Canned Dog and Cat Food is also on our high priority list.

Week of 8/28/16 Humane Happenings

Vickie

Desert Haven is a busy place every day of the week, especially on Tuesdays, which is reserved to welcome visitors and also for large projects.  The no-kill sanctuary is in existence for the purpose of helping companion animals-in-need, providing them with a safe and loving environment until they are adopted out or to the end of their natural life. It’s a big undertaking, but we believe in what we do.

Little Vickie is a prime example. She was rescued at Desert Haven a number of years ago.  The young puppy had been dumped by her owner, together with a large number of other dogs, some of them pups like her, in the middle of the desert around Cuchillo where the man lived. The reason? The hoarder had been tipped that the Sheriff Department was ready to pay him a visit to ensure that all his dogs had been vaccinated for the mandatory rabies shot.  Of course, none of them had been vaccinated for anything. Vicky was one of two pups who made it back to the vicinity of Cuchillo some days later. One pup was taken in by the good Samaritan who discovered both, the other brought to Desert Haven. The sanctuary became Vickie’s home. Time passed and Vickie grew up, a loving fur-girl full of life and energy. As she grew-up, her chances for adoption slowly went down. And then she became a senior dog at the no-kill sanctuary.  With new specific needs, the elderly fur-gal continued to receive special attention and her living quarters were revamped along the way to allow her to continue to enjoy life to the fullest. Last year, Vickie was adopted by a senior gentleman. Our fur-girl had found her forever home at last. Hurray!

That’s what Desert Haven is all about. We ensure that all our little rescues,  young and old alike, enjoy life as fully as we are able to provide for them. Contributions of time and effort, donations - both financial and in-kind - that are ear-marked for the sanctuary residents, help bring safety, comfort and loving care to the little ones who reside there. If you believe in making a difference and that you can help our animal welfare cause in some way, contact us at 575-894-2639 or at weR4pets@gmail.com
