Week of September 7 Humane Happenings

by Eliana Aubin

Starlight enjoys a visit!
Desert Haven Animal Refuge is Sierra County’s no-kill sanctuary. Dog Town at Desert Haven is known to be a fun place to be, both for the canines residents and also for everyone who helps care for them. There are several ways to be involved at Dog Town. One can walk the dogs in the morning, between 7:30 and 10:30, a most enjoyable activity indeed.  Helping feed and care for the little guys and girls inside their own living quarters is also part of the rewarding feeling of doing something worthwhile in one’s life. Not only an animal lover can make great connections with the fur-babies there, without the long-term commitment of responsible dog ownership, but one also knows that everyone who resides there is a lucky dog indeed, living every day in a loving and safe environment. Here at Desert Haven, the staff cares for each and every fur-baby as their own, and adoption applications are carefully reviewed before any of our little ones moves out of Dog Town at Desert Haven.

Tico is a young Pomeranian mix.  Micky, Jack and Teddy are all young, small, Terrier-mix. Their equally small playmate, Holly, is a Miniature Pinscher. Little Jenny-May, Mel and Speckles are young heeler-mix. Each one is small to medium size and looks very different from the other.  Goldie is a senior cocker spaniel - a loving little gal who would make a great companion for a senior person.  Red the Golden Retriever, Ben the Black Lab, Forest the Hound and Mosey the Ridgeback, Scruffy the Shepherd, Lucy the heeler-shepherd, Starlight the Manchester Terrier, Dixie the Airedale-terrier are also currently residing at Dog Town.  Buster and Molly are in the process of being adopted. Lilly was just adopted out.  Interested in visiting them? Come on down to Desert Haven on a Tuesday.

This week’s wish list: a used refrigerator in good working condition. We have needed one for a long while now, and have been hoping along the way for some help from supporters in replacing our old fridge that is beyond "its last leg". Canned Dog and Cat Food is also on our high priority list.
