HUMANE HAPPENINGS - Week of September 11 2016

by Eliana Aubin

My name is Mollie and I am the newbie
The Sierra County Humane Society and Desert Haven Animal Refuge offer anyone who wishes to make a difference in the lives of dogs and cats down-on-their-luck the unique opportunity to do so, in their own individual way.
Are you a dog aficionado, but perhaps you don’t have the space or lifestyle that allows you to share your life with a dog? Then become a Dog Walker at Desert Haven! The sanctuary is located on the outskirts of Williamsburg.  Walking in a serene environment, in the fresh morning air and with a dog by your side is good for your health, both physical and emotional.  At Desert Haven, you will be surrounded with happy furry boys and girls of all sizes and temperaments as well as with people of kindred spirit, people who are committed to make a difference.

Jack and Phyllis are Desert Haven’s Operations Coordinators.  Kevin, an Air Force Veteran who relocated from Colorado at this time last year, is the sanctuary Animal Care Coordinator.  These kind-hearted people work exceptionally well together and with the other members of the Desert Haven staff  and the atmosphere around them is one of friendliness and cooperation, of warmth and caring that are valued and cultivated within our entire animal welfare organization. Belinda came on board in the Spring of this year to take on the position of bookkeeper for our non-profit organization. Belinda’s many strengths, including her professionalism and her love for all animals, together with her willingness and tendency to routinely go above and beyond, are making her an exception individual and a true asset to our animal welfare organization and our no-kill sanctuary.
Are you a handyman willing to share some of your skills and time with our team? Kevin and Jack need help installing a brand new sink in the Eagle Point Mobile home. We have the sink and its plumbing accessories. Can you spare some of your time on a Tuesday, please let us know at 575-894-2639 or weR4pets@gmail.com.
Canned dog and cat food, also dog treats, are always a high priority at Desert Haven. We are looking for construction and roofing material for our projects, also for a good used swamp cooler and a lawn mower. We can pick up if needed.
