Week of 3/25/12 Humane Happenings

by Eliana Aubin

Blue with new parents, Karen & Leon Hinkle
Desert Haven Animal Refuge is a no-kill sanctuary for Sierra County companion animals who have been abused or discarded, and also those from folks who no longer can take care of them. The dogs and cats rescued at DHAR very often need special attention, including routine and often emergency - and costly - veterinary care, which they receive on arrival. These little ones are then ready to move on to a new life. Adoption fees at Desert Haven are carefully decided on by the Sierra County Humane Society Board of Directors. Many things have to be taken into account in this decision making - the current economy, availability of the right type of loving home, but also and as importantly, the long-term viability of Desert Haven.

Most people don’t know that normal adoption fees at DHAR don’t even cover half the expenses of sterilizing and vaccinating the dogs and cats as we take them in and give them a home for life or until adoption. Also these adoption fees don’t even touch the operating costs of Desert Haven, costs of feeding, of housing and caring for these animals, which include routine and emergency veterinary care. Those of us who share our lives with our beloved companions realize the costs of having them.

We at Desert Haven could not do what we do and offer our routinely subsidized adoption fees without the generous financial support of animal loving folks from all over who believe in what we do for the little ones down-on-their-luck.

During its first Annual Springtime Adoption Blitz last week, the Sierra County Humane Society adopted out dogs and cats at 75% off regular fees - a huge savings for adopting families, also a heavy financial burden on our organization. To give more dogs and cats a chance at adoption, our Board decided to continue the adoption special during the entire month of April, this time at 50% off regular fees. Adoptions will take place onTuesdays between the hours of 9 AM to 5PM.

This past week, our P&C Thrift Shoppe crew worked very hard, sorting through a large number of boxes and bags of craft and sewing items, assorted remnants of material, some of it obviously vintage. The craft items, etc. are now tagged and priced and displayed for sale inside the store. Volunteer opportunities continue to be available at Paws & Claws and Desert Haven.

Week of 3/19/12 Humane Happenings

by Eliana Aubin

Jim Seery and Foxy Girl

This week and until the end of the month when his commitment to Desert Haven Animal Refuge is over, DHAR work camper Jim Seery is generously offering to cover half the adoption fee of either Shadow or Foxie Girl, should the right forever home becomes available to one of the two girl-dogs before he leaves the area.

Shadow is an affectionate female Black Lab who came to Desert Haven as a very young pup several years ago, after being discovered by accident imprisoned inside an all-enclosed out-of-the- way storage yard. Her rescuers believed that the small pup had been thrown over the 7 foot fence and simply abandoned there to die.
Pat with Chowder & Shadow

Shadow is no longer a puppy, although she often thinks she still is. She wants her very own companion and her very own place in the Sun. Foxie Girl is a gorgeous female boxer who loves attention and who would also make a fun-loving and loyal family dog. Perhaps not even two years old now, Foxie was rescued at the sanctuary last year at this time. If interested in either one of the two girl-dogs, visit the sanctuary on a Tuesday or call 575-497-0168 for an appointment.
The latest canine rescues have now settled in Dog Town and met all the other furry residents there. Bobby is a gorgeous five year old King Charles Cavalier with excellent manners. His human companion – an older senior who took him into his home and his heart as a puppy – was heartbroken when he recently had to give him up. Bobby thrives around people and he enjoys canine playmates. The little guy would make someone a wonderful companion.

Among other canines of various breeds and sizes living at Dog town, there is three years old twenty-five lbs Rosie, a terrier mix with a very happy disposition. There is also seven years old, eleven lbs Sally the shy Miniature Pinscher - ten months old Fergie the quiet Terrier-Chihuahua mix - Jewel is a Pomeranian-with-personality. Tiffany is a tiny two years old Terrier-Chihuahua mix. Bobby and Zena are young Cocker Spaniel siblings. They have been sterilized, their shots are up-to-date. They are ready for adoption.

A male Pekinese and a female Boston Terrier need a new home. They can be adopted locally directly from their owner’s home. Contact 915-319-9088. The Adopt-a-Pet-Referral program is one of our animal welfare organization’s service oriented programs offered totally free of charge to pet owners wanting to relinquish their animals directly from their home.

This week’s wish list: dog walkers and kitty cuddlers at Desert Haven. Helpers at Paws & Claws Thrift Shoppe. Contact us at 575-894-1694 or e-mail us at weR4pets@gmail.com.Check us out at www.DesertHavenAnimalRefuge, at www.Facebook.com/deserthaven.

Pat & Maxwell

This week, the Sierra County Humane Society reminds animal loving folks who wish to support our animal welfare organization in some way, that we routinely collect aluminum cans and Bullocks receipts. Cans and receipts are then redeemed to help bring much needed funds to operate the Society’s spay-neuter and spay-a-stray programs. You can drop-off your bags of aluminum cans inside the SCHS Can Corral, located adjacent to the Paws&Claws Thrift Shoppe building in TorC. Bullocks receipts are also collected inside the Thrift Shoppe when it’s open for business – from Wed through Sat, from 11 AM to 4 PM. We also have collection boxes at the TorC public Library and Desert Haven Animal Refuge. Our organization receives absolutely no funding from government entities, local or otherwise. We operate entirely with contributions from private and corporate entities and with the profits from Paws & Claws Thrift Shoppe. P&C is by far the major fund raiser for our entire organization and it takes the efforts and hard work of many volunteers to keep the shop open and successful, especially in the current economy.

This week, we are collecting patio blocks to get a priority project underway inside the Cool Cat Neighborhood. If you have a few to donate towards our efforts, let us know. This week’s wish list: bird seeds, chicken scratch, cracked corn and sunflower seeds for the residents of Birdland & Animal House.

One of Desert Haven’s strongest supporters lives in the little town of Victoria, Texas. Regularly, this wonderful lady makes a point to send boxes of CDs and DVDs that we in turn sell at Paws & Claws. She also keeps us supplied with customized handmade price tags that we use at P&C. This animal loving lady who wishes to remain anonymous is most certainly one of our organization’s most treasured supporters.

Jennifer Kneib and Pat Madden have been strong supporters of Desert Haven for several years now. They live way out in the country around Hillsboro. Once and twice a week, respectively, they take the time to drive all the way to the sanctuary to help care for the little rescues. Jennifer takes charge of the feline and bird habitats and Pat is a dog walker. We need more local volunteers to help us care for our little residents. If interested, let us know.

If unable to give a hand, perhaps you can donate material or funds to help with the project. Contact us at 575-894-1694 or 575-497-0168. Check us out at www.DesertHavenAnimalRefuge, also at www.Facebook.com/deserthaven. You can also e-mail us at weR4pets@gmail.com.

Bunnies at Desert Haven

Spring is almost here and with it the dog and cat breeding season will soon be in full swing. The Sierra County Humane Society wishes to remind everyone who genuinely cares about their companion animals to have them sterilized. Not allowing one’s dog or cat to breed in a world that is already overpopulated with unwanted animals is an act of kindness towards a beloved animal and a major positive step towards helping the tragedy of pet overpopulation in this area. Sierra Animal Shelter with its multitude of dogs and cats routinely euthanized and disposed of in the local land-field is a constant reminder of that tragedy. The Sierra County Humane Society continues to be pro-active in offering Spay/Neuter rebates to area residents. Applications are available at the TorC Police Station, Hot Springs Animal Clinic and Paws & Claws Thrift Shoppe. We wish to thank the TorC Police Department secretaries for assisting with this valuable community service since the program started in 1990.

The funds needed to operate the comprehensive Spay/Neuter program are generated at Paws&Claws Thrift Shoppe, located across the alley from the TorC Family Dollar. The yearly budged for the entire program is around $10 thousand dollars. P&C Thrift Shoppe also cover the costs of operating the SCHS sponsored Adopt-a-Classroom program, which brings Humane Education directly into participating Sierra County Elementary classrooms. Interested in more information on both programs? Contact us at 575-894-1694.

The Animal Control Ordinance indicates that a companion animal left out-of doors must have – within easy reach – an adequate shelter that provides protection from the elements and of course a constant source of water. If you witness animal neglect or abuse, contact Dispatch at 894-7111. Request to speak to the Animal control Officer. It is usually wise to request a follow-up from the Animal Control Officer within a reasonable amount of time. If the situation does not get corrected very soon, contact the Sierra County Humane Society at 575-894-1694 and we will investigate. If you prefer, you can also contact the state-wide Animal Cruelty Hotline at 877-5HUMANE (877-548-6263). Callers may remain anonymous. Animal loving folks must speak out against animal neglect, cruelty and abuse, regardless of who is causing it. If we don’t, who will?

Thank you, Jennifer Kneib, for your long-term commitment to Desert Haven. Jennifer drives one morning a week all the way from Hillsboro to help care for the sanctuary’s feline population and in Birdland. Interested in helping out with animal care a couple of hours a week? Do you enjoy walking dogs? Contact us at 575-894-1694. Check us out at www.DesertHavenAnimalRefuge, also at www.Facebook.com/deserthaven. You can also e-mail us at weR4pets@gmail.com.

Letter to the Editor re: Desert Haven Animal Refuge

NOTE: LINDA AND CARL WORK CAMPED AT DHAR through last fall and until January 15 of this year.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: In late October, my husband and I left the rainy metropolitan suburbs of Seattle, Washington, for an opportunity to volunteer as “work campers” at Desert Haven Animal Refuge, located a few miles from Williamsburg on Highway 187. Many retired seniors who own RVs volunteer to work for a specified number of hours each week in return for an RV parking spot. Since this was our first work camping experience, we had no idea of what to expect in an animal refuge, perhaps the typical steel cages and a sterile environment of some animal facilities. What a delight to find a place that lived up to the title of “haven and refuge”. Desert Haven has large, roomy areas for abandoned or abused animals, including dogs, cats, rabbits, chickens and peacocks. All animals are housed in spaces that have comfortable houses and furnishings appropriate for each species. Dogs can romp and play in their own yard or race about the acreage that is used during their daily walk. Cats roam about freely in Cool Cat Country with its large outdoor and indoor spaces filled with small privacy houses or cubbies, climbing apparatus, and high shelves. The animals receive nourishing food, plenty of exercise and caring, human contact. It has been a heartwarming experience to see the generous donations of food, bedding, and other necessities that arrive for the animals from a supportive community. Dedicated community volunteers help with all aspects of animal care and provide the animals with affection, as well as work at Paws and Claws, which supports the refuge. The beauty of Desert Haven’s location, the caring staff, the friendly volunteers and the warmth of the T or C and Williamsburg communities have created a never-to-be forgotten experience for us. Returning to Desert Haven as work campers will be on the top of our “bucket list”. Whether interested in adopting a pet, volunteering or just wanting time with the animals, it is worth your time to visit Desert Haven Animal Refuge on any Tuesday.

Week of 2/26/12 Huamne Happenings

by Eliana Aubin

Kim and his new buddy

Winter TorC resident Kim Nelson will soon return to his home in Minnesota. Kim visited DHAR for the first time last spring and it was a real pleasure to see him getting involved again this spring. He will be sorely missed by everyone including all the canines with whom he shared quality time almost every morning. Kim has been a huge help at the sanctuary, as he walked and exercised the residents of Dog Town. We trust that he will returns in a few months, perhaps this time as a permanent TorC resident.

This week, we are appealing to our dog loving folks for their help in walking the sanctuary dogs once or twice a week, during AM or PM Animal Care. Pat Madden, a resident of Lake Valley, has been a dependable DHAR Dog walker for several years now. Two mornings a week, Pat drives all the way from the small community beyond Hillsboro to exercise the DHAR dogs for a couple of hours – a huge help for our volunteer team. Perhaps someone in the community could help out one of the mornings that Pat is not on the Dog Walking schedule. We also need help walking our DHAR dogs during PM Animal Care, which at this time of the year starts at 4:30PM. Interested? Let us know!

Thank you, Geri Moore-Hajek, for your kind words shared on the Desert Haven Facebook page about our never-ending work to help animals in need. Interested in supporting our efforts through the internet? Click today and every day on the Animal Rescue Site http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com. which funds food for some of the 8 millions unwanted animals given to shelters and sanctuaries in the US every year. And choose The Sierra County Humane Society & Desert Haven as your cause of choice. Important: “Free to good home” pets are at risk - for being sold for medical experimentation and sometimes used for bait to train in dogfights right here in New Mexico. There have been reports of free cats and kittens being killed so their hides can be sold in this area. If you must advertise your unwanted dogs or cats, our organization encourages you to charge a small fee to prevent the mental attitude that “free pets” are of no value and to help drive such businesses out of our NM communities.

This week’s Wish List: someone to sharpen all the veggie-cutting knives of DHAR. Patio blocks to get a priority project underway inside the Cool Cat Neighborhood. If unable to give a hand, perhaps you can donate material or funds to help with the project? Contact us at 575-894-2639 or 813-716-2033. Week of 2/20/12 Humane Happenings

by Eliana Aubin

Tuesday afternoon project at Desert Haven
The last remnants of the cold winter nights are still with us in Sierra County, and Desert Haven Animal Refuge is once again appealing to compassionate area residents to donate their no-longer-wanted used pillows, blankets and flannel sheets for our little residents. You can drop them off at the front gate of the DHAR property or bring them in person on Tuesday, when the sanctuary is open for visitors. Paws&Claws Thrift Shop will also gratefully accept your contributions for Desert Haven from Wednesday through Saturday, during the shop’s business hours from 11 AM and 4 PM. For more information, contact 575-894-2639.

Our large DHAR dogs love to play tug-of-war with fleecy blankets and fluffy comforters which soon become unusable rags. So, while we use warm comforters and pillows inside the Feline Dorm and the Inn at Dog Town, our staff chooses straw and also donated spoiled hay to keep our larger fur-kids warm inside their Canine Condos and Doggy-Duplexes. We also use bales of straw and spoiled hay as windbreaks inside the canine yards, which is very successful. For several years now, Jeanette Galliard of Albuquerque helps ensure that Desert Haven stays supplied with enough straw to meet most of its needs. Some time ago, local resident Bobby Dawkins donated an entire trailer load of spoiled hay that he felt was no longer safe enough to feed his horses. His donated bales of hay are a huge bonus as they provide soft bedding for the canines of DHAR. We always welcome contributions of bales of hay and straw regardless of their condition. Our team is very resourceful and we gratefully put to use everything that is donated to Desert Haven along the way.

We offer volunteer opportunities both at Paws & Claws Thrift Shoppe and Desert Haven. We always need extra dog Walkers and Kitty Cuddlers at the sanctuary. If interested, contact us at 575-894-1694. We also need a couple of handymen interested in donating some time on Tuesdays. We have several projects in the works, including a small chain link enclosure to build, a 12 ft Old West wooden fence to strengthen, a 10 by 10 Catzebo to strengthen. Resurfacing several sections of the Cat Walks with patio blocks or manageable cement slabs is on our prirority list. If unable to give a hand but wish to help in some way, perhaps you would like to donate materials or funds to help with the projects? Contact us at 575-894-2639. Visit us at www.DesertHavenAnimalRefuge.com. Chat with us at www.Facebook.com/deserthaven. You can also e-mail us at weR4pets@gmail.com.

Week of 2/12/12 Humane Happenings

by Eliana Aubin

Kim and his new buiddy
This week, the Sierra County Humane Society and the staff at Desert Haven wish to especially thank all our animal loving friends and supporters in our community and beyond. We are a small and budget-minded animal welfare organization that operates through the generosity of local and out-of-state folks. Thanks to the local newspapers who print our Humane Happenings articles every week, caring people from all over are able to follow our efforts and help us out whenever they can.

With the cold weather lingering in Sierra County, local resident Patty Duffy and her family recently gathered several boxes of goodies for the DHAR fur-kids and also many much-needed warm items to be used by our felines and very small dogs. Then she kindly dropped all of them off at the sanctuary’s front gate this past week-end. Kim Nelson is an out-of-state resident who is spending a few weeks in Sierra County again this year. While in the area, Kim helps us care for the dogs of Desert Haven. He walks them and spends quality time with them almost every morning during Animal Care. When he heard of our recent plea for canned dog food, he immediately came to the rescue. As far away as the little town of Victoria, Texas, one of Desert Haven’s former work campers – who by the way wishes to remain anonymous - learned of our needs for canned dog food through the Humane Happenings and she too helped insure that our DHAR cupboards would not stay empty for too long. The show of support from our animal loving friends from all over has been very humbling indeed. Jim Seery work-camped at the sanctuary in early 2011 and he is back to help out this Spring. When he realized that Shadow the female black lab, was still at the sanctuary, he made it his goal to facilitate her adoption by covering half of the adoption costs. DHAR work camper Jeff Thompson is commiting to cover half of the adoption costs of the Boxer Foxie-Girl, so that she too can be adopted soon.

This week’s wish list: Handymen needed. We have a small chain link enclosure to build. A 12 ft Old West wooden fence needs strengthening. Our Catzebo needs a complete make-over. We have other projects in the works. Do you have a few patio blocks you no longer need or perhaps you can lay a couple of small cement slabs inside our Cat-Walk? If unable to give a hand, could you donate material or funds to help with the projects? Contact us at 575-894-2639 or 575-894-1694. Check us out at www. Facebook.com/deserthaven and www.Facebook.com/pawsnclaws. You can also e-mail us at weR4pets@gmail.com.

Week of 2/5/12 Humane Happenings

What rewarding few weeks we had at Desert Haven Animal Refuge, the NO-KILL domestic sanctuary owned and operated by the Sierra County Humane Society!

Tudor
DHAR most senior feline, Tudor, was adopted recently. The “Old Boy” is enjoying the last chapter of his long life in Phoenix AZ. Maggie-Girl is settled in her forever home in TorC. Riley, the fun loving kitty everyone had fallen in love with, is starting his new life in Washington State. His plane ticket and adoption fee were both covered by then-work campers Carl and Linda Schmidt who also generously covered half of the adoption fees of Tudor and Maggie-Girl to facilitate their adoption. Loverboy, a feline who has resided at DHAR for the past several years, is the latest little guy to be adopted from DHAR. The latest news from Dogtown: Blue now lives in Albuquerque. Freedom moved to her new home in TorC and Cinder has found his place-in-the-sun in Elephant Butte. Bosom-buddies Chowder and Isis were adopted together and are now enjoying the excitement of country life with their new family in the mountains of southwestern NM.

Jim Seery work-camped at the sanctuary in early 2011. He adopted Sparky from DHAR before he left to attend his daughter’s college graduation in Michigan last spring. Jim is back and everyone who worked with him last year is thrilled to have him back for a few more months. Jim continues to demonstrate his loyalty to Desert Haven and all its creatures. When he realized that Shadow the female black lab, was still at the sanctuary, he made it his goal to facilitate her adoption. Shadow was less than three months old when she arrived at the sanctuary in 2007. She had been discovered by accident one morning inside a tightly locked enclosure completely surrounded by a seven foot fence. She was frightened, dehydrated and starving. She was hurt but with no broken bones, even though it was obvious that the small pup had been thrown over the fence days earlier. Our black lab girl needs her own loving home and Jim is pledging to cover half her adoption fee to facilitate her adoption. Thanks, friend!

This week’s wish list: Handymen needed. We have a wire fence to build and a wooden fence to mend. Our Catzebo needs a complete make-over. We need patio blocks or someone to lay a couple of small cement slabs. We have other projects ready to go. If unable to give a hand, could you donate material or funds to help with the projects? Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Week of 1/29/12 Humane Happenings

by Eliana Aubin

Jim Seery (left) and Foxy Girl

Desert Haven Animal Refuge, Sierra County no-kill domestic sanctuary, is now home to several newly arrived little rescues now ready for adoption. There is Jewel, a young black & tan Pomeranian with a great personality. There is well-mannered 5 years old Bobby, a tan & white cocker spaniel anxious to become someone’s beloved companion again. Two little ones came to us together: 8 months old Cadi is a red with black highlights Terrier-Chihuahua and her buddy -5 lbs Fergie - is also a Chihuahua.

One-and-a-half year old Boxer - Foxy Girl - was rescued at the sanctuary at around this time last year. Although a gorgeous and loving little girl-dog who would make a wonderful family companion, Foxy Girl is still waiting for her forever home.

Pat with Shadow (on right)

Shadow is a loving five years old female black lab who has resided at the sanctuary since her rescue in 2007. To facilitate Shadow’s adoption, Jim Seery, a friend of Desert Haven and returning work camper, is covering half of her adoption fee. Shadow is sterilized and her shots are up-to-date.

This week, we wish to thank local residents Bill & Mary Jane Clellan and Mary Roden who answered our plea and donated enough canned dog food to allow us to keep our little fur-kids supplied for a little while longer this winter. Canned dog and cat food are two major staples in our pet-food pantries and we appreciate everyone who helps us keep our furry and feather dependents well fed. We also thank the local and out-of-town animal loving folks who send monetary contributions either directly to Desert Haven or to the Sierra County Humane Society & Desert Haven account at Horsin’ Around Feed & Tack in T or C. The donated funds deposited in our account at the feed store allow us to purchase alfalfa, grains and seeds for our small army of rescued guinea pigs, rabbits, doves, peacocks, roosters and hens. Any pet food contribution you wish to make can be dropped-off at P&C Thrift Shoppe during business hours - Wed through Sat from 11AM to 4 PM. You are also welcome to bring your in-kind or monetary contributions to the sanctuary on Tuesdays, when it is open to visitors.

Volunteer opportunities are always available at Desert Haven and P&C Thrift Shoppe. Walking a DHAR dog or two of your choice one or more mornings a week can be a fun way for anyone to stay fit or get in shape. Contact us at 575-894-2639 or 813-716-2033. Week of 1/22/12 Humane Happenings

by Eliana Aubin

This week, the Sierra County Humane Society wishes to acknowledge a very special individual who currently volunteers one day a week at Paws & Claws Thrift Shoppe: Glenn Parks. Glenn is a local, very active service oriented senior citizen who enjoys keeping busy. And Glenn stays busy indeed! When he is not selling office furniture at the local flea market, Glenn may just be handling the cash register at Paws & Claws Thrift Shoppe, a bargain hunter’s paradise located across the alley from Family Dollar in TorC.

P&C is a non-profit entity operated by the SCHS, Sierra County’s animal welfare organization. All the profits made at P&C return to the community in many ways, including through its service oriented programs such as the Spay-Neuter and Adopt-a-Classroom. Profits from P&C also help cover the operating costs of Desert Haven Animal Refuge, Sierra County’s no-kill domestic animal sanctuary.

A good humored and very pleasant people-person, Glenn started volunteering at the non-profit thrift shop over a year ago. For many months, he used his professional skills to test, repair whenever possible, and also display inside the store the electrical items and small appliances as well as some electronics that are routinely donated “as is” to our organization. When you shop at Paws & Claws, take time to say “hi” to this very special volunteer. These days, you will find him sitting behind the counter, as he operates the cash register and makes the shop’s customers feel welcome and appreciated for shopping there. Glenn’s positive attitude and friendliness are making him a real pleasure to work with and everyone on the team appreciates the time and energy that he gives to our animal welfare organization. Way to go, Glenn!

Our wish list is to be able to re-stock the food storage in Dog Town with canned dog food. Dog Town is currently home to an average of twenty resident canines and we routinely mix from four to five cans of dog food with plenty of dry food to feed our healthy and active little group every morning. If you value the work we do and wish to help in some way, consider dropping-off canned dog food at P&C Thrift Shoppe during business hours - Wed through Sat from 11AM to 4 PM. Your contribution is also welcomed at DHAR on Tuesday, when the sanctuary is open to visitors.

Volunteer opportunities are always available at Desert Haven and P&C Thrift Shoppe. Contact us as 575-894-1694 or 813-716-2033. E-mail us at weR4pets@gmail.com. Visit us at www.DesertHavenAnimalRefuge.com , www.Facebook.com/deserthaven. and www.Facebook.com/pawsnclawsthriftshoppe.
