Humane Happenings

by Eliana Aubin

The Sierra County Humane Society continues to collect Bullocks receipts. Josephine Varnum has picked them up from the Bullocks drop-off box at P&C Thrift Shoppe and the T or C Library, also at the Williamsburg Post Office ever since the program went into effect many years ago. She tallies them for us and redeems them at Bullocks on our animal welfare organization’s behalf. PLEASE: do not cut off the bottom section of your receipts for any reason. If you do, they cannot be redeemed and we must discard them. Josephine deserves a huge thank-you from everyone who loves animals for being so helpful for so many years. We receive a large number of receipts every week and it helps cover some of the costs of both the SCHS Spay-Neuter and Spay-a-Stray programs. Bullocks grocery store in T or C is very community minded indeed. Sierra County dogs and cats, including feral cats who have a caregiver to watch over them, benefit from the program, courtesy of our organization. We also thank all the nice people who save their receipts and their friends for our animal welfare organization.

We also collect aluminum cans. We have a Can Corral adjacent to P&C Thrift Shoppe in TorC, across the alley from Family Dollar. We routinely take a truck load of cans to a local recycling center and the money collected also helps fund our comprehensive spay-neuter program.

Do you like to paint? If so, we have just the project for you – it’s not a big project, perhaps a couple of hours at the most, and it can be a very enjoyable! We need to get several kitty-condos painted, each one in a bright and cheery color – and hopefully before the monsoon season starts. The paint was recently generously donated by Walmart. Once the project is completed, the kitty condos will be moved back into the Feline Dorm inside the Cool Cat Neighborhood at DHAR. This summer and until our long-term crew comes back from vacation or from their summer play-grounds across the US, our Desert Haven kitties would love a couple of hours of your time on any morning of your choice? At 8 AM, the weather is cool and the “Neighborhood” is active with felines of all sizes and temperaments who love any extra attention. You prefer dogs? We have them too and they all want your attention and to be walked by your side if you will give them some of your time – and what great exercise it can be for you too!
