​ In 1999, the Five-acre property on which Desert Haven Animal Refuge ​was subsequently built from the ground up was purchased by the Sierra County Humane Society with funds unselfishly donated by a handful of animal loving people determined to start a much-needed no-kill movement in this corner of the Desert Southwest. And here we are in 2016 – Desert Haven​ is​ up and in operation for a while now. This year, one o​f the goals of the SCHS Leadership is to revamp and upgrade the​ ​16 years old​ sanctuary.

 This winter, the no-kill sanctuary is fortunate to be home to a very special group of work-camping folks from all over – a “Dream ​ Team” indeed. Kevin of Colorado, Bob & Trisha of Texas and Cindy & Cathy of Ohio, have all been making things happen since their recent arrival at Desert Haven. They all have positive energy and extensive skills and as importantly, the dedication ​and the focus that makes them a very special team indeed. Dog​Town, Birdland and The Neighborhood are all in the process of receiving some much needed repairs and long-awaited upgrades. Birdland is being revamped to provide more comfortable ​& spacious living quarters for the feathered residents. Inside the Neighborhood, all the felines are taking advantage of the new walkways and perches recently built around the perimeter of the Cat Walks and inside the Feline Dorm.​ ​We are ​currently actively looking for new or used construction material, including plywood​ and wooden posts. Call us at 575-894-2639 or e-mail weR4pets@gmail.com.

Harley needs a home!

The Sierra County Humane Society is a non-profit 501-c-3 animal welfare organization that gives a voice to local companion animals down-on-their-luck. It offers crucial community oriented programs, including a comprehensive sterilization program that also includes stray & feral cats. Its Adopt-a-Pet Referral program offers dog and cat owners who can no longer care for them an opportunity to connect with individuals wanting to share their home and their life with one. This is how it works: Do you need to give-up your companion animal? Provide us with a photo or two and as much information as possible. We will post it on our Desert Haven Petfinder page, also on both our Facebook pages at www.Facebook.com/DesertHaven and www.Facebook.com/PawsnClawsThriftShoppe. Potential adopters who visit Desert Haven can also check our on-going list of dogs and cats available through the program. It is posted at the sanctuary. Harley needs a new home. He is a 2 ½ years old lab/Airedale cross. He weighs 60 pounds. He has been microchipped, neutered, and is up to date on all of his vaccinations. He is very sweet and affectionate and is house trained. His human is not able to keep him because of a divorce. Our animal welfare organization collects aluminum cans and Bullocks receipts. The funds they provide when redeemed go towards our Spay-Neuter and Spay-a-Stray program. To learn more about these crucial programs, contact us at 575-894-1694. Our Can Corral is located adjacent to Paws & Claws Thrift Shoppe. We have Bullocks receipts drop-off boxes at the TorC public library, the Williamsburg Post Office, Desert Haven animal Refuge and also at Paws & Claws, next to Family Dollar in TorC.

Ed and Camille Pronovost

This week, the Sierra County Humane Society wishes to honor a very special professional lady who currently resides in Florida, with her husband Ed. Camille has been very dear to our heart ever since the couple work-camped at Desert Haven quite a few years back. Their stay at the sanctuary was only temporary, but their commitment to companion animals in need and to our animal welfare organization especially continues to stay strong year after year.

Before the couple moved on to a new commitment in Arizona, Camille very generously offered to take on the responsibility of creating and, as importantly, of maintaining a professional looking web site for Desert Haven:  (www.DesertHavenAnimalRefuge.com).

And here we are, already January 2016. It’s been over 10 years since Camille & Ed made their mark at Desert Haven. Among many acts of kindness over the years, this professional lady set-up a Facebook page for Desert Haven (www.Facebook.com/DesertHaven) and also Paws & Claws Thrift Shoppe ( www.Facebook.com/PawsnClawsThriftShoppe, both of which she is the responsible admin. Quite an impressive lady indeed! 

The Christmas spirit is still alive and well at Desert Haven. Ringgo’s Mom and Dad who live in Texas sent several boxes of needed items including hand-made -and very much needed – labels with strings for Paws & Claws Thrift Shoppe. This wonderful couple continues to help our organization whenever possible and we are extremely grateful to both of them for their generosity over the years.

San Francisco CA residents Earl and Courtney, together with their fur-boy Elvis, recently sent to the sanctuary several big boxes via Amazon. It was so enjoyable for the Desert Haven volunteers to open the boxes this past Tuesday: Milk bones for all the furry residents of DogTown, and also enough sturdy doggie coats to keep warm and comfortable the several small dogs who very recently were rescued at the sanctuary. Thank-you Earl & Courtney!  

Local residents and visitors to our area, please continue to save your Bullocks receipts for our organization. Kingston resident and Charter member of our animal welfare organization – Josephine - picks them up regularly from several drop-off locations, including the T or C Public Library, the Williamsburg Post Office and Paws & Claws thrift Shoppe.  Bullocks very generously donates to our 501-c-3 non-profit organization $2 per every thousand dollars that Josephine tallies. The money donated by Bullocks goes towards our Spay-Neuter and Spay-a-Stray programs, in existence since 1991 and 1995 respectively.  Applications for local residents to participate in this very important program can be picked-up at the T or C Police Station.

Week of 1/3/16 Humane Happenings

      We are entering into a new year and as the Sierra County Humane Society is closing the last chapter of 2015, there are many reasons to be grateful. Several local businesses & their owners who generously supported our animal welfare organization and Desert Haven Animal Refuge this past year deserve a special thank-you from all our animal loving friends and members:  Suzan, owner and operator of Animas Creek Nursery located near Caballo, NM, Sierra Veterinary Services in T or C, owned and operated by our local veterinarian, Dr Dawkins. There is Bullocks Grocery Store, our friendly “Hometown Grocery Store” located in downtown TorC, also SunValley Hardware. Horsin’ Around Feed & Tack Store in Williamsburg, which by the way closed its doors quietly and permanently this past Tuesday also supported our organization and Desert Haven in 2015. Legal Advisor Attorney John Wheeler and CPA James Bagwell are both very generous with giving of their time and sharing their professional knowledge with us. Last but not least, the local media continues to be very supportive year after year. The space allowed for our weekly HUMANE HAPPENINGS articles, for example, is priceless to our organization, as we share animal oriented information with our readers in both local newspapers. Our members and supporters are from all over. Thanks to their on-going generosity, we at Desert Haven are able to save and give a new lease on life to as many unwanted companion animals as we possibly can, until they are adopted out or to the end of their natural life. A very special “thank-you” goes to Gina of Ruidoso, NM, to William of IN, Larry & Mavis, also of IN, to Earl & Courtney of California, Coqui’s mom Vicki of CT, Duke’s mom and dad of Albuquerque and to Sharon and Bill, also of ABQ, to Ringgo’s mom and dad of Texas, Rick of MA,  Lee of AZ and Jon of VA, and to many others not listed here. Their support started long before 2015 and we are immensely grateful for their on-going kindness over the years.

Week of 12/29/15 Humane Happenings

      Desert Haven Animal Refuge, the small no-kill domestic animal sanctuary owned and operated by the Sierra County Humane Society has taken in several new furry residents recently. Jack is an 8 month old Jack Russell (& Schnauzer ?) mix. This little boy-with-personality has already charmed everyone at Desert Haven.

 

Roxie and Holly are both black-and-tan Miniature Pinschers, one and two years old respectively. While Holly is a people person, the youngest and smallest one is still very shy in her new surroundings. Although she enjoys the company of the other little ones her size, she still has some ways to go before she feels completely comfortable around most people. That will obviously require extra-special loving attention and of course plenty of tasty treats readily available. 

 

 Then there is Libby, a three-year old Toy Manchester-Terrier mix who has already made the Puppy Play Yard and its Puppy Club House her home. Two-year old Corgy-Terrier Mix, Foxxy, is the latest arrival at Dog Town. This tiny fur-boy reminds some of us of a miniature Arctic Fox - hence his new name “Foxxy”.  

  

   The new little rescues are now part of the daily life at Dog Town and the other canine residents have already accepted them as one of them. Check out the stories & photos of our newest little rescues at www.Facebook.com/DesertHaven and  www.Facebook.com/PawsnClawsThriftShoppe.

  As soon as they are “vetted”, including shots, sterilization, etc., the little ones will be ready to be adopted out and move into their new homes.  

      All our fur-boys and girls are on their best behavior, especially at this time of the year, in anticipation of special visits that may even lead to wonderful FOREVER HOMES. Desert Haven is open to visitors & potential adopters every Tuesday, between 9 AM and 4 PM.

   The past couple of weeks have been especially productive at the sanctuary. The chain link fencing & posts very generously donated to our organization by Frances of the Sentinel Newspaper have already been put to good use. The major project was completed this past Tuesday. Hurray for Bob, Kevin and Larry, all of whom were involved in the project. Thanks again, Frances, for making it possible.

Week of 12/20/15 Humane Happenings

The past couple of weeks, the conversation piece among the feathered and furry residents of Desert Haven Animal Refuge has been that winter is finally here. Fall was especially wonderful this year.

This past Tuesday, Taz, our fur-boy-dog-with-character, went to his new home with Patricia, a local, very sweet senior lady who plans to give him all the love and attention he deserves. In the feline quarters, Mama-Cat melted the heart of local resident Sue, who had recently lost her life-long companion who looked just like our little fur-gal. This Tuesday afternoon, Sue adopted her. It feels so good to know that all these little ones – once unwanted and discarded, many of them physically injured and traumatized in the process - will now enjoy their very own Forever Home just in time for the Holidays. Here at Desert Haven, we make every effort to be very careful to whom we adopt out our little rescues. We would not want them to fall into the hands of the wrong people.

We wish to thank Dean, Velda, Marian & Bruce, also several anonymous individuals, who thoughtfully dropped-off dog and cat food, milk bones, bird seeds, brand new doggie and kitty beds, a bale of hay and also some warm bedding for all the little residents. A very special thank-you goes to Frances of the Sentinel Newspaper, for donating chain link fencing and posts to Desert Haven. Last Tuesday, Larry, Bob and Kevin picked it up & transported it to the sanctuary. Thanks, guys! The donated fencing will be put to good use on location within the next couple of weeks.

Large, national animal welfare organizations can afford multi-media advertising firms who raise funds for them on a large scale. Small organizations like ours cannot compete. While most of what these large organizations receive in the process goes directly to the professional advertising firms, donations sent to small organizations like ours directly benefit companion animals who need our help. Here at Desert Haven, we are successful because we are dedicated and we work hard, also because animal loving folks believe in us and they help us help animals in need. We are making a difference in our corner of the world.

Week of 12/5/15 Humane Happenings

December is usually a very busy month of the year for the Sierra County Humane Society and already.  December 2015 is proving to be no different.

Our Second Annual Lights of Love celebration was held at Desert Haven Animal Refuge this past Tuesday. Central Bark - the main courtyard – is once again decorated with shining white and colored Christmas lights representing all the fur-boys and girls loved & remembered by our animal loving friends from all over - a colored light to honor a little one, a white light to remember one who has passed on. What a warm feeling we had as we watched all these little lights shining in the dark, knowing that that so many companion animals are being remembered and honored in this way.  

Gentle Ben has gone home with his new adoptive parents, Sue & Dan, and we are told that the fur-boy is adjusting well in his new, loving environment. Very lucky fur-boy indeed! The two smallest residents of Dog Town, Chihuahuas Penny & Violet, were discovered a few weeks apart two winters ago. Each one had been seen wandering for days along the country road near the very small community of Caballo. Both were emaciated, injured and extremely skittish by the time they were rescued at Desert Haven.  Small dogs are easy prey for the coyotes, bald eagles and horned owls especially, all known to inhabit that area of the Desert. Now, two years later, Penny & Violet are healthy and have both regained trust in humans. This past Tuesday, they were adopted by a family.  Their companion of several weeks, Matty the Lasho Apso, also a little rescue, was adopted with them by the same family. Hurray! 

 

 Marian & Bruce, you helped make this past Tuesday a special day for our Desert Haven team, when you so generously dropped-off pet food, treats, bird seeds, also brand new doggie and kitty beds there.

Week of 11/14/15 Humane Happenings

AmeriCorps Volunteers

        Recently, Desert Haven had the genuine pleasure to receive the visit – and the very much welcomed help - from nine members of AmeriCorps. AmeriCorps is a real-life education and work experience wrapped into one. It takes in individuals willing to do something special, something unique, something exciting as they help make this country a better place, such as bring needed services to a low-income community.

        For several hours on a sunny afternoon this past week-end, AmeriCorps members Katherine Smith of CT, Darlene Gray of MT, Alice McVicker of VA, Cody Watts of KY, Jasmine Aldershoff of– FLA, also Katie Fernandez, Taylor Haight, Evelyn Kwong and Nicolas Ashford of CA, took on several of the much needed projects that our Desert Haven team had planned to take on sometime this year but was forced to keep putting on the back- burner for lack of adequate volunteer help.  Alice, the spokesperson for the team at the time, mentioned to us that several members of the team are planning to hopefully return to the sanctuary to take on some more projects on our To-Do list before they move on mid-December. Hurray!  And from the bottom of our hearts, to every member of the AmeriCorps team who came to give a hand at Desert Haven Animal Refuge this past week, Thank You!

Week of 11/8/15 Humane Happenings

I'll take it!!

        The past several weeks have been full of activities at Desert Haven Animal Refuge, the no-kill domestic animal sanctuary owned and operated by the Sierra County Humane Society.

        Newly arrived Fox Terriers Miles, Milo and Shi-Tzu mix Matty, are now sterilized. Miles is in the process of being adopted. Dog Town is home to dogs of various breeds and sizes, including two little Chihuahuas, Penny & Violet. These small, young fur-babies have resided at Dog Town for many, many months now. Both are trusting that someone special will want to give them a loving home for the holidays.  Penny & Violet, together with Miles, Milo and Matty, and occasional play-mates Penelope & Sancho, are taking advantage of every amenity offered by their Puppy Play Yard and its cozy indoor section.  

        Thanks to Joe, Tom and Kevin, Dog Town is now ready for winter.  Inside the Inn, carpet remnants have been cut to size and laid-out everywhere on the cement floors.   All the furry little ones have their very own doggie-bed to snuggle in at night. In the play yards, every igloo and dog house is now thoroughly insulated.  With the Cool Cat Neighborhood and Birdland also recently winterized,  every little resident at Desert Haven will be warm and cozy this winter.

Gentle Ben, the young black lab abandoned at Percha Dam State Park three weeks ago, is now residing at the sanctuary.  His new playmates - Taz and Missy – have welcomed him into their circle and the three of them can be seen playing never-ending games.  If everything goes as planned, Gentle Ben will soon be ready to become the newest member of Sue & Dan’s family in TorC.

Week of 10/24/15 Humane Happenings

This week, the Sierra County Humane Society wishes to thank all our animal loving friends from all over who, at this time of the year and especially through the holidays, are remembering our organization with their generous holiday contributions and miscellaneous gifts for the little residents of Desert Haven Animal Refuge, Sierra County’s No-Kill companion animal sanctuary.

 A few days ago, Williamsburg resident Velda, who is a long-time supporter of our organization, dropped-off at the sanctuary a car load of much needed pet food items and dog and cat accessories. Sharon of Albuquerque responded once again to our recent appeal for canned pet food for the sanctuary residents. She dropped-off her very generous contribution at Paws & Claws Thrift Shoppe. The non-profit business is located adjacent to Family Dollar in TorC. It is owned and operated by our animal welfare organization.

Bedding items such as used pillows, blankets, comforters, etc. that are donated at the store but are too well-worn to be sold inside the store, are routinely saved for use at Desert Haven. They will keep our fur-boys and girls as warm and as cozy as possible this winter.

We also wish to thank several of our animal loving friends - some of them are local, others are residing out-of-state - for their on-going support of our cause through the Sierra County Humane Society Recurring Giving Program. This program lets you make your gift in easy monthly or quarterly installments. Recurring gifts mean so much to our little rescues currently residing at the no-kill sanctuary and they have a significant impact as to what we can do on an on-going basis for the unwanted, neglected and abandoned companion animals in our area.

Week of July 5 Humane Happenings

Patriotism at Paws & Claws Thrift Shoppe

This past week has been very active for the Sierra County Humane Society, especially because many people contacted us at 575-894-2639 and at weR4pets@gmail.com to possibly find out the whereabouts of their beloved fur-kid who disappeared during the July 4th fireworks. We help spread the word. As importantly, anyone who has lost a companion animal should immediately contact Sierra Animal Shelter at 575-894-2240, located at 1607 North Date Street.

Our animal welfare organization is not the Animal Control Department; We do not pick-up stray or dead animals. Should you need this service, call Dispatch 575-894-7111 to connect with the Animal Control Officer on duty. The ACO also handles complaints of animal mistreatment or neglect. If you witness someone mistreating or neglecting an animal, no matter how well known the person is in the community, it is your moral responsibility to contact Dispatch and require the ACO investigates before it’s too late. And don’t let anyone – anyone - tell you that a commercial wire dog kennel out-in-the open, with a piece of plywood over it, is “adequate protection”. If you see that nothing changes to the situation, contact us at 575-894-2639. Someone who leaves a dog, especially a mother with newborns, outside without adequate protection from the elements, water or food at any time of the year - is disgusting. We will take the necessary steps to help ensure that all companion animals receive the protection they needs. Your information will stay confidential.

We very much appreciate every donation, large or small, of canned pet food and treats. Our supporters are amazing! We value each and every one of you!

We continue to save Bullocks receipts. Please bring them to Paws&Claws Thrift Shoppe between 11am and 4:30pm, Wed through Sat. The store is located next to Family Dollar in TorC. If it is closed, simply slide them under the front door. SCHS Charter Member Josephine Gurnsey-Varnum picks them up regularly and redeems them for $$$ for our organization. Please do not leave your donation outside, whatever it may be.

1st week of July 2015 Humane Happenings

Help us locate "Rocko", missing since a car accident on 6/21/15 north of Elephant Butte, NM

This past week, Eliana Aubin, President of the Sierra County Humane Society, met with Police Chief Lee Alirez at his office. The major focus of the meeting was to get mutually acquainted and to ensure a professional connection would be made now that Chief Alirez had settled as the new TorC Chief of Police.

Our animal welfare organization’s professional relationship with now-retired Chief of Police Priscilla Mullins was always positive and one of mutual respect. Former Chief Mullins was already on the TorC Police Force when the Sierra County Humane Society was organized in 1989. Over the years, as she climbed the TorC Police Department ladder, Mullins served under several chiefs, including Chief Russ Peterson who was always considered one of our animal welfare organizations strong local supporters and for whom our respect has always been very high.

After this positive and informative first meeting with the current Police Chief - Lee Alirez - we are confident that the professional relationship between the Sierra County Humane Society and the TC Police Department will continue to be one of mutual trust, respect and understanding.

He is the neutered, gentle well-mannered German Shepherd mix who was riding in the vehicle involved in a bad accident on Sunday June 21, North of Elephant Butte at the first canyon. His beloved humans were hurt and Rocko may be hurt as well. He was seen jumping out of the back window and running South down the HWY and then across the HWY going West.
